An important advantage of laser welding is the extremely low distortion of the workpiece. A disadvantage, however, are the high investment costs making the method often unprofitable for small scale fabrication. The tandem MIG/MAG process is a further development of the conventional MIG/MAG process which can be integrated into any existing production line at relatively low investment cost. The article discusses the technical advantages and limitations of this process, while reviewing practical experiences at the Kvaerner Yard in Rostock, Germany.
