The robotic welding of catalytic convertors with ferritic stainless metal cored wire Arcaloy 409Ti 1.2mm in octagonal Marathon Pacs. The welding productivity in the production of catalytic convertors can increase by as much as 30% by the use of ferritic stainless metal-cored wire from ESAB MarathonPac, instead of the commonly applied 1.0mm solid wires. Arcaloy 409Ti metal-cored wires are welded in the spray arc mode, in Ar/2%O2 shielding gas, enabling the use of cheaper non-pulsed inverters. At 300A welding current, they yield a deposition rate of approximately 7.8 kg/h. Excellent wetting characteristics and spatter-free welding make this product specifically recommended for the welding of exhaust systems.

A view on the production of manifolds for exhaust systems at AP Parts Torsmaskiner AB in Sweden. AP Parts Torsmaskiner AB in Sweden, a daughter of the french Faurecia Group, produce manifolds for Volvo and other European car manufacturers. The article offers a view on their production welding, discussing ESAB welding solutions for the MAG welding of ferritic stainless steel components. The article was published in Svetsaren, our customer magazine, issue 1/2000.

The use of metal-cored wires for welding exhaust systems in ferritic stainless steel exhaust system components replacing MAG solid wire. In the USA, ferritic stainless steels are increasingly used for exhaust systems to provide increased life cycles; a trend in material selection that is coming over to Europe as well. Matching composition metal-cored wires, available from ESAB, provide a productive alternative to solid wires for the most commonly used stainless steel grades. Types for austenitic stainless grades are included. Several automotive applications are highlighted. The article was published in Svetsaren, our customer magazine, issue 1/2000.
